How Do Intelligent Storage Systems Work?
An intelligent storage systems works through the coordination of two major components which are the controller and the storage.
In the storage system, we have a purpose driven operating system that enables it to perform its key operations. This operating system is usually run by a computing system known as a controller. It typically helps with the performance of functions like storage management, performing I/O from the application servers, replication, compressions, encryption and cache management among others. For purposes of redundancy, more than one controllers are usually present. Each will have its own processors and cache memory so as to be able to handle the I/O requests.
The system is also comprised of the storage where the actual data is stored. There are a number of ways in which this can be structured. The storage can either be block-based, file-based, object-based, or be a unified storage system.
The Architecture of Intelligent Storage Systems
There are usually two architecture available for intelligent storage systems. One of them is the scale up architecture. This one provides the provision for scaling up the storage system as per the requirements. This process usually involves the upgrading or increasing of controllers and storage. However, they come with a disadvantage if fixed capacity limit which if crossed will affect the performance of the storage system. This puts a limit on the scalability.
The other architecture is the scale-out storage architecture. Unlike the former, this provides the ability to maximize on the capacity with additional nodes on the cluster. This means that when capacity has been reached and the performance starts to decrease, nodes can simply be added to reduce downtime. The moderate performance of each node will add up to a better aggregate performance availability and performance of the intelligent storage in general. It also enables load balancing among the various nodes.
